Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is a type of scan that contains a large tube with the powerful magnets that use strong magnetic fields and radio waves to produce detailed images of the inside of the body. Unlike X-rays and CT scans, an MRI doesn't use radiation. MRI scanning is painless and image and resolution is quite detailed, and it can detect tiny changes of structures within the body. During the examination, radio waves manipulate the magnetic position of the atoms of the body, which are picked up by a powerful antenna and sent to a computer. The computer performs millions of calculations, resulting in clear, cross-sectional black-and-white images of the body. These images can be converted into three-dimensional (3-D) pictures of the scanned area. These images help to pinpoint problems in the body. The function of MRI is mainly used to observe brain structures and determine which areas of the brain “activate” (consume more oxygen) during various cognitive tasks. It is used to advance the understanding of brain organization and offers a potential new standard for assessing the neurological status and neurosurgical risk.
